Artist Statement

Emma Moody-Smith’s practice explores the process of making. She investigates artistic and everyday actions asking, why do we make things, keep things, covet things? The tension between process and object underpins her creative thinking and material choice: using traditional materials in expanded ways through scale and repetition, often with reference to performance. She cites this repetition as being a way to “withdraw and explore my mental state”. Moody-Smith is interested in the role of the artist in society, which informs her study of “time, place and self”.
